Chapter 18: Step 2 – Intuitive Leadership

Before you publish a vision statement or a set of core values, your team already knows whether the path feels trustworthy.

They feel it in how you carry decisions, in what genuinely excites you, and in where your energy lifts or tightens. The North Star that your team actually follows is the one they can sense without being told.

Chapter 18 of Build Trust. Become the Brand. introduces Step 2 of the Intuitive Branding Process: building a North Star so rooted in your four intuitive types that your people can carry it without constant explanation or enforcement.

What Intuitive Leadership Builds

Intuitive Leadership produces three aligned elements: a Vision rooted in Creative Intuition, a Mission grounded by Situational Intuition, and Core Values that originate from Relational Intuition and Experiential Intuition. When all three are genuine, when they originate from the leader’s actual signal system rather than from what looks good externally, the North Star becomes something the organization can feel and carry.

When they are constructed to satisfy outside expectations, the North Star exists on paper but not in the room.

Boeing: When the Compass Separated From the Decisions

Boeing’s identity was once inseparable from its engineering standards. Safety was not a department; it was the operating system of everything the company built and every decision it made.

Then, competitive pressure and shareholder expectations created urgency to move faster. Engineers raised concerns about design flaws. Pilots voiced unease about training. Every intuitive type was pointing toward caution. Deadlines overrode every signal.

346 lives were lost across two crashes. [3] Nearly 400 aircraft were grounded. [4] Boeing paid a $2.5 billion DOJ penalty. [5] The total financial impact reached $4.1 billion. [6] The compass had separated from the decisions being made, and the consequences were irreversible.

1-800-GOT-JUNK?: Re-centering the Compass

When Brian Scudamore sensed that managers hitting their numbers were quietly draining belief from the room, he acted on that signal rather than defending the metrics. He let go of multiple senior executives in a single week and rebuilt the leadership compass from the inside out.

System-wide annual sales are estimated to cross $500 million by the end of 2025. [1] The platform expanded across 3 countries with a consistent culture. [2] New jobs continued to be created at scale as the culture that had been rebuilt became self-reinforcing. [7]

The Key Takeaway

The compass is what compounds. When the North Star is genuinely felt, the organization carries it without needing to be reminded. When it separates from the actual decisions being made, the cost compounds in the direction of every signal that was overridden to keep the schedule.

As Sunil Godse writes: “The clock always pushes. The compass is what compounds.”
